Chapter 19

Jesus entered Jericho and was passing through. A man was there by the name of Zacchaeus; he was a chief tax collector and was wealthy. He wanted to see who Jesus was, but being a short man he could not, because of the crowd. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore-fig tree to see him, since Jesus was coming that way.

When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly.

All the people saw this and began to mutter, “He has gone to be the guest of a ‘sinner.’ ”

But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, “Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount.”

Jesus said to him, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. FOR THE SON OF MAN CAME TO SEEK AND TO SAVE WHAT WAS LOST.”

#35 wow, imagine if that’s really the tree?!

That’s the claim, anyway. If it is, everybody and his brother would want to climb it, me included.

Tell you what: I’ll meet you there on the first anniversary of Jesus’ Second Coming.

Been there...didn’t climb the tree though, as it has a little fence around it...for now.

There will be plenty of trees to climb in Heaven, they line the sides of The River of Life (Rev. 22)

Looking forward to it! :-)

When Jesus is parceling out how many cities His saints shall take charge of, I think He will appoint Zacchaeus to oversee all tree-climbing everywhere.

Do Sycamores live that long?

That was my question. Other species do....

Dan, I did some research on this tree’s fruit (when ripe, they look like Apricots).

The fruit has an unpleasant taste, but there are claims that the taste can be ‘improved’ by piercing the fruits with iron. Anyone know more about this?

We have a type of Ficus in Florida; they grow fast and big, even in sandy soil. They do not bear fruit.

I am as big an ignoramus about horticulture as I am about art.

I can’t explain it, even to myself. But I found nearly every one of the images unsatisfying.

What did you have for breakfast?

Almost daily, as I prepare these threads, I am dissatisfied with the art I find—because it is so inadequate at illustrating the text. Today, for example, every single image portrays Z-in-the-tree. That merely illustrates his curiosity. Where is the art showing Jesus’ willingness to sup-with-a-sinner, with its implicit challenge, or Zacchaeus’ repentance at refunding-his-funding?

And that doesn’t begin to address the multitude of Bible passages which generated little or no art at all!

“the art I find... is so inadequate at illustrating the text.”
,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Good point Dan. It looks like the artists depict the ‘most visual’ part of the story. But how to paint repentance and a new life? That’s just not as flashy I guess.

I think Tissot works hardest at trying to portray the Bible’s subtleties. That, among other reasons, is why I respect not merely his art but him, as an obedient Christian.

according to
https://encyclopediaoffacts.com/sycamore-fig-tree-facts/#:~:text=The%20sycamore%20fig%20tree%20is%20a%20large%
sycamore figs can live a few thousand years
the tree in the photo does not look that old
however, there may have been a die back and what we see is sprouted from the same root

Thanks!

Of course, the main concern is not the tree’s longevity but rather that of Zacchaeus, who by all appearances awaits our arrival at the Pearly Gates.

Thank you!! One slight correction (not your fault because it is misidentified by the caption):

No. 9 is captioned (in German) "Darstellung: Jesus und Zachäus" ("Depiction: Jesus and Zaccheus") but it isn't.

The ribbon on the window says, "Herr ich bin nicht wurdig dass Du eingehest [? subjunctive of gehen] unter mein Dach." In other words, "Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof."

That's the centurion in Luke 7:6, not Zaccheus.
